Products / Liquid Cooled Cold Plates
Liquid Cold Plates: Overview of Technology

In today's most demanding applications, liquid cooling has become the choice of designers striving to manage the rising heat loads of high power electronics. Whether it's lasers, power generation and conditioning, medical equipment, transportation or military electronics, liquid cold plates offer performance advantages over air cooled solutions in high watt density applications.

Aavid Thermalloy offers the widest most innovative line of cold plate products. From standard to fully customized solutions, Aavid Thermalloy is the expert in liquid cooling.

Aavid Thermalloy Standard Cold Plates use three different technologies to solve application thermal problems. Each standard technology cold plate can be custom configured for length, width and fluid path to meet specific application requirements.

Performance Comparison

The graph below compares normalized thermal resistance expresses in C-in2 / W of Aavid cold plate technologies. The normalization of the data allows designers to compare thermal performance across technologies without regard to physical size. Technologies with lower thermal resistance values offer the highest performance in the application.

Fluid Compatibility

Working fluids are critical to cold plate performance. While water offers superior performance it is not always practical due to application operating temperature. Additives such as Glycol are often required to change the characteristics of water to better suit the operating environment. In addition, coolants must be compatible with the cold plate material to reduce the potential for corrosion. The table offers guidelines for coolant compatibility with Aavid Thermalloy cold plates.

Quality Control

Aavid Thermalloy LLC ensures consistent quality of its products by following the documented processes/procedures within Aavid’s ISO 9001:2000 Certified Quality Management System (QMS). Key elements that ensure consistent product quality include the following:

Design Innovation: Industry expertise in thermal management designs including design for manufacturing to ensure sufficient performance of production product.

Design Control: Completely software based engineering design review, release and change control process including centralized control of machine programs.

NPI (New Product/Process Introduction): Formal "stage gates" for new product introduction including:

  • Process definition (BOM's, Routes & Work Instructions, Production Part Approval Process PPAP)
  • Process characterization (stability & capability / Cpk)
  • Process control plans (Process Management Plans / Quality Plans)
  • Design validation (FAI's & lab and applications testing)
  • Controlled release ("hand off") to manufacturing / sustaining engineering
Process Monitoring & Control: Standardized "1st Piece" / Setup Checkups and "on-line", "real time" SPC where appropriate.

Effective Inspection & Test: Mechanical inspection, leak and flow testing and thermal testing customized to meet the application. Aavid Thermalloy LLC has developed proprietary high resolution, application specific, thermal testing capabilities for high performance design requirements.
